„Ein Leben wie ein Roman“ betitelt die Frankfurter Rundschau ihren Artikel über Hubert Michelis und seine Odyssee als Mönch, Banker und schließlich Schriftsteller. Er selbst bezeichnet es nüchterner als „These, Antithese und Synthese“. Und in der Tat, das Leben des 1958 im rheinischen Düren geborenen Autors ist voller Brüche und bedarf einer Synthese und damit der Verarbeitung. Als er 2014 wegrationalisiert wurde, war es für ihn keine Tragödie, sondern die Chance, endlich das zu tun, was er immer schon machen wollte: Schreiben. Geschrieben hat er zwar immer schon. Bereits als Pennäler verfasste er Gedichte und Essays für die Schülerzeitung.2014 erfolgte mit ‚Die Bauern‘ sein Erstling, eine bereits Jahre zuvor entstandene Familiengeschichte, der weitere Erzählungen, Kurzgeschichten, aber auch Romane folgten. Dass vieles davon mit seinem Leben zu tun hat, ist nicht verwunderlich. Der Stoff, Erlebtes wie Fiktives, muss nach Ernest Hemingway, den Michelis in seinem ‚Eisbergstil‘ als seinen wichtigsten Lehrmeister ansieht, zunächst verarbeitet, ja regelrecht verdaut werden. Erst dann wird eine Geschichte lebendig und gut.
